One great part about relocating with my workplace is that accommodation has been provided for us for the first 2 months of our stay. We're in a lovely apartment just a few minutes south of the city centre, surrounded by the canals. Also nearby is the botanical gardens (Hortus Botanicus), a park (Oosterpark) and a zoo (Artis Zoo), all of which I'm sure we'll visit at some point.
The first time we enter our building, we are shocked at the sheer height of the staircase we are faced with. The staircase is so high and narrow, with each step barely wide enough to fit a foot on. The photos don't do it justice. Fortunately we only have to go up 2 flights of stairs before reaching our level.
Leaving our front door, we are confronted with a stereotypically picturesque laneway, filled to the brim with bicycles.
The building itself is lovely, red-bricked with detailed banisters and high windows, typical 18th century Netherlands architecture.
The inside is clean and new, but has a few surprises for an Australian who is uninitiated with European house design.
Firstly, the central heating systems which adorn the walls of every room- not something I've never had need for until now, but I am very grateful for them.
Also, this particular plumbing fixture caused some confusion. A quick google reveals that it is a bidet, although it is in a completely separate room from the actual toilet...
