Island Escape

The Netherlands is not the place that comes to mind when you think of a tropical island escape- and with good reason.  Nevertheless, the Wadden Sea islands off the Northern coast of Friesland are a nice change of scenery from the rest of the Netherlands.  With our friends from our life group/bible study group, we took the 2 hour ferry ride from Harlingen to the island Terschelling where we stayed in a rented beach house for the weekend.  

The house was just a few metres from the start of the dunes, although the dunes were quite wide and it was almost 2km to the actual beach.  It was quite different from an Australian beach house with its double glazed windows, thick brick walls and central heating.   It was very comfortable which is just as well, because unfortunately it rained for most of the weekend.We spent the majority of the weekend inside hanging out together, playing cards, and eating way too much food.

When the sun finally came out, we headed to the beach.  Tropical it is not, but the beach was surprisingly nice, with long stretches of white sand and nice blue water.   It was quite cold so swimming was not an option, but it was nice to walk along the beach.
